High-schooler Akira Shiroyanagi is pulled out of an ordinary morning and killed by the observer Mion, then wakes in a facility where kidnapped people are given abilities and told to fight. The opening program is a round of one-on-one duels, where Akira and Yūri Amagake start to test what their powers actually do and whether anyone can leave.
The survivors are grouped into teams of five for ring matches that run until one side has three wins. Keeping the true shape of an ability hidden matters as much as using it, and Akira's team has to fight without handing the other side a complete picture of what they can do.
A survival contest splits the field into factions that score points to earn a place in the next program. Akira falls in with the green team against the red team's leaders, and a war game forces both sides to fight until one of them is gone.
The people who cleared the third program return to Tokyo for a battle among dozens of ability users grouped under observers, with only a handful allowed to go on. Killing strengthens a power, and stepping off the field can drop someone into a separate game run by an observer.
The last remaining participants attack the observers' isolated domains to take the Graces that sit behind their powers. Each domain has its own rules, and taking a Grace can change what a person is able to do.
