Coco has always wanted to become a witch, even though she was taught that magic belongs only to those born with the gift. After secretly watching Qifrey cast a spell, she learns that magic is drawn with tools and symbols, but her first attempt petrifies her mother. Qifrey takes Coco in as an apprentice, where her first lesson becomes a test of whether ingenuity can carry her through a dangerous labyrinth.
Coco and the other apprentices travel to Kalhn so she can find a pen suited to her way of working. A masked witch sends the group into a labyrinth, where a dragon forces the four students to combine their different strengths while Qifrey searches for them.
A rescue mission at the Staircase River gives Coco and Agott a chance to help a stranded caravan, but the Knights Moralis accuse Coco of using forbidden magic. After the incident is contained, Qifrey follows a clue in Coco's ink toward the Brimmed Caps and risks pursuing it alone.
The apprentices begin another trial in Serpentback Cave, where they must escort myrphons through ancient magical ruins alongside Euini, a student who has already failed twice. A Brimmed Cap turns the test into an attack, leaving the apprentices to rely on one another while Qifrey and the adults try to reach them.
Season 1 ends here
The Serpentback Cave trial becomes a fight for survival when forbidden magic transforms Euini and leaves Qifrey gravely injured. Coco, Tetia, and their friends must navigate the hostility of the ancient Romonons while confronting an enemy who treats the apprentices as pieces in a larger plan.
The injured Qifrey is taken toward the underwater Great Hall, where the apprentices meet Beldaruit, one of the Three Wise. A new trial offers Coco and her companions a way forward, but its puzzles also open a path toward truths about the people who teach them.
The apprentices finish Beldaruit's trial and Coco receives a glimpse of Qifrey's past as part of her reward. Hoping to find answers about magic and her mother, Coco sets out for the Tower of Tomes, where knowledge comes with risks of its own.
Back at the atelier, Coco and her friends prepare a magical contraption for the Silver Eve festival with help from Tartah. The work brings them back into contact with Custas, the boy Coco once helped, and asks them to weigh the delight of magic against the harm it can cause.
Coco and her friends take their inventions to Ezrest for Silver Eve, a festival that draws witches, royalty, the Knights Moralis, and the Three Wise into the same city. Celebration and political history share the streets, while an unwelcome presence threatens to turn the gathering into something more dangerous.
Custas introduces Coco and Tartah to Ininia, whose loyalty to a Brimmed Cap forces the young witches into a promise to join the Silver Eve Procession. Coco must devise a new spell under pressure, while a mark of forbidden magic on Dagda brings the danger closer to the people she is trying to help.
The Silver Eve Procession gives witches a chance to win an audience with the king by showing an exceptional spell. Coco freezes when she tries to help Dagda and Custas, and Agott becomes the person who can move her forward even as their choices pull them toward different consequences.
The apprentices' procession display is interrupted when a huge threat descends on Ezrest. The Knights Moralis, the king, and the Three Wise answer the crisis, while Coco searches for a way to protect Custas and Dagda in a city where nobody's safety is assured.
The force behind the disaster in Ezrest is finally subdued, but Coco pays a heavy price. Beldaruit gives her a spell that lets her rejoin the search for Custas, while the aftermath draws separate lives into new and difficult intersections.
Custas and Dagda are reunited at the Medical Spire, but the apparent reprieve is broken by Qifrey's warning. Coco responds to a valance leech attacking the city by proposing a plan that depends on witches across the community working together.
The witches' response to the valance leech continues as the festival reaches its climax. Coco and Agott work to keep the plan together while the fate of Custas and Dagda, the Brimmed Caps, and the coming parade remain tied to the same dangerous moment.
